Capturing Helene Clarkson’s Designer Collection

For this collection shoot, Helene Clarkson’s home became the setting, and the designer herself modelled the clothes. Both choices gave the photographs a connection to the person behind the brand.

We worked with the rooms’ different backgrounds, from the softly lit living area to the cleaner lines of the hallway. The brief brought clothing and surroundings together in a series of lifestyle photographs.

A home as the setting

The interior gave us variety within one location. The living area offered natural light and a softer background; the hallway introduced a different arrangement of lines and space.

For a clothing shoot, a location needs to work with the garments as well as look good on its own. Here, the home gave the collection a setting in everyday life, with different rooms available for changes of background.

The designer in front of the camera

With Helene modelling her own collection, the designer and the clothing could appear in the same story. We used relaxed poses to show the pieces being worn within the home.

That was the approach for this project. For another brand, a founder portrait, a model-led collection shoot or a combination of the two could serve a different brief. The choice starts with what the photographs need to show.

Clothing within a larger scene

The rooms added context around the outfits: furniture, daylight and the shape of the interior became part of each composition. These photographs show the clothes within a setting, alongside the person wearing them.

When planning a collection shoot, it helps to separate the images a customer needs to examine a garment from the wider photographs that introduce its setting or styling. We can plan those uses together, including any closer views or consistent product images needed for a shop.

Give the shot list a purpose

Before a new fashion or e-commerce session, decide which pieces need photographing and where the images will appear. A website banner, a collection page and a social post can call for different framing.

From there, we can choose locations, backgrounds and poses around the brief. My Helen Design shoot story offers another example, using a grey studio background and a prepared shot list. It is a separate project for a different brand.

Explore the collection and plan your shoot

The photographs here document this collaboration. To explore the brand’s current clothing, visit Helene Clarkson’s website; availability may differ from the pieces shown in this gallery.

If you are planning photographs for your own collection, see my business and commercial photography or tell me about the garments and images you need. We can build the shoot around your collection and its intended uses.
