At Home: A Natural-Light Editorial in Elegant Magazine

A burgundy outfit, an ornate chair and a cool-toned wall open At Home, the editorial shown in the Elegant magazine pages above and below. I photographed the series before the 2020 lockdown, working with Margo Amp, makeup artist Liudmila Elkina and stylist Olga Miller.

Natural light for At Home

I used natural light throughout this shoot. In the opening photograph, it falls across Margo's face and leaves part of the room in shadow. The texture of the wall and the shape of the furniture remain visible, giving the portrait a setting as well as a background.

That balance was central to the series: a quiet boudoir mood, with enough attention to clothing and the interior for the photographs to work together as a fashion editorial.

Clothing, pose and the room

Olga brought the wardrobe for the shoot. In the opening image, the burgundy clothing stands out against the blue-green wall, while Margo's hands connect her pose to the chair. The setting and styling give us several lines to work with before adding anything else to the frame.

Margo brought expression and movement to the photographs. Alongside the light and wardrobe, her contribution helped carry the idea across the series.

The people behind the editorial

  • Photography: Dmitry Bugaenko

  • Model: Margo Amp

  • Makeup: Liudmila Elkina

  • Styling: Olga Miller, credited as Olya Miller in the magazine

The original spreads preserve the magazine's design and printed credits. I have kept them here as a record of the publication.
