A balcony, a shower, a bed and the floor: four settings within one small hotel room. That was the space I worked with for a boudoir shoot with Tanya in central Moscow. The photographs appeared as From Moscow with Love and became a cover feature in the November 2020 issue of Dominante magazine (Vol. 18).
Working within a small room
I wanted to see how much variety I could make within the space we had. A hotel room gives you fixed elements to work around: the position of the bed, the bathroom and whatever access there is to a balcony. Each becomes a possible setting for a different photograph.
For this shoot, the variety came from using those parts of the room rather than changing locations. The original magazine pages below bring the resulting images together.
A collaboration with Tanya
Tanya was the model for the series, and I am grateful to her for trusting me with the shoot. The photographs and the publication were the result of that collaboration.
Working in an intimate setting also makes communication part of the preparation. For anyone planning a boudoir session, the level of undress, poses and boundaries are things to discuss together. A particular location or reference photograph does not decide them for you.
The cover and original magazine pages
The cover appears above, followed by the original spreads below. I have kept the magazine pages intact so you can see how the photographs were presented as a feature, alongside the printed title and credits.
This is an archive of that Moscow shoot. My current photography sessions are based in Toronto.
Planning a boudoir session in Toronto
If a room or a particular mood has given you an idea for your own photographs, we can start there. My current boudoir photography page explains the sessions, and my guide to boudoir locations covers the practical differences between settings.
Tell me what you have in mind, and we can discuss a suitable location and a direction for the photographs.
