A white shirt, warm wood and a bright lamp open In the Mansion, my editorial with Kate Klein published in Picton Magazine. We photographed the series in a historic mansion in central Moscow, with wardrobe styling by Tatyana Podolyakina and makeup by Liudmila Elkina.
The mansion as a setting
The room contributes a lot to the opening photograph: carved wood, a blue wall with a repeating gold pattern and a plant beside Kate. The lamp sits within the scene, adding a bright point close to her pose.
I like how much of the interior remains visible in that wide frame. The portrait has a clear setting, with the shapes of Kate's seated pose standing out against the room's more regular lines.
Two wardrobe directions
The white shirt gives the opening image a simple, light element against the darker background. In another portrait, a dark, shimmering outfit and closer framing give the series a different texture.
Those changes let the photographs move between the room and the person. The wider view gives the setting space; the closer portrait brings Kate's face, hands and clothing forward.
