Bathtime in Beyondall: A Boudoir Series Built Around One Light
One light, a bathtub and candles: those were the elements around which I built Bathtime, a boudoir series with Margo Amp published in Beyondall magazine. The opening spread above gives the photographs their title and credits the team behind them.
One light and a restrained setting
I worked with a single photographic light source for this shoot. The dark wall and bath keep the setting simple, while the candles add smaller points of brightness around Margo.
The limited setup made the choice of pose and framing important. The photographs stay within a narrow palette of dark surfaces and warm skin tones, so changes in the figure are easy to see from one image to the next.
How the poses change the frame
In the opening spread, Margo sits upright on the edge of the bath. Across the opening gallery pages, she reclines beside it, with her arms extending across its edge and her legs reaching into the foreground.
Those positions give the images different shapes within the same setting. I like the way the series moves between the upright portrait and the longer lines of the reclining poses without needing a new backdrop.
